We always knew our friends in the South were hogging all the Waffle Houses, but we had no idea they were stashing more than 100 in one effin' city... Through the help of Google Earth, mapsbynik crunched some numbers on WaHo density, pinpointing the top 21 most highly concentrated areas in the nation. While places like Greenville, South Carolina might be proud of their 34 Houses, Atlanta blew everyone out of the maple syrup with 132 total locations.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A fight involving up to 20 people turned fatal after one person was shot outside of a restaurant near Ohio State University early Monday morning. The restaurant opened at the location in 2016 and was popular for patrons of Eddie’s Attic upstairs, people serving jury duty at the nearby courthouse and students from Decatur High School. There are 1,988 Waffle House restaurants in the United States as of April 23, 2024. The state and territory with the most number of Waffle House locations in the US is Georgia, with 439 restaurants, which is about 22% of all Waffle House restaurants in the US. This visualization stems from my irrational, lifelong infatuation with Waffle House, the always-open dive joint that manages to provide a low-cost, consistently-satisfying breakfast meal at its 1,600+ locations.

As an Atlanta native, Waffle House and its iconic assortment of greasy comfort foods is near and dear to my heart. As it happens, Atlanta also has the highest concentration of Waffle House locations in America. After opening a fourth restaurant in 1960, the company began franchising its restaurants and slowly grew to 27 stores by the late 1960s, before growth accelerated.
Immediately north of Atlanta, the Cartersville, Georgia quad is next highest on the list with 45 locations. These are followed by Greenville, SC (34), Athens, GA (29) and Fort Worth, TX (25). The Atlanta metro area's dominance on the map is not unexpected, though its scale is somewhat surprising. The first Waffle House restaurant opened in the Avondale Estates, an inner Atlanta suburb, in 1955 and the company is headquartered in Norcross, another nearby suburb. It significantly beat out Cartersville, which includes most of Atlanta's highly populated northern suburbs.
